Contemporary Dance Uniform

Hair – Hair must be worn in a secure ponytail to prevent it from becoming caught or interfering with the dancer during skills.

ORDER MALE UNIFORM → You will be sent information separately to purchase certain uniform for class. (top & bottoms)

Contemporary uniform must allow the teacher to clearly see the dancer’s posture, alignment and body positioning, while also helping to protect the skin during floorwork.

All tops/bottoms must be fitted. An approved overlay/layer may also be worn where appropriate — please see the guidance below.

Bottoms
Full-length Official Studio Leggings are required for Contemporary.

Male dancers should wear the approved fitted studio dance/sports leggings.

No Shorts

Shorts are not permitted for Contemporary classes due to the amount of floorwork involved.

Contemporary training regularly includes:

Floor slides

Rolls

Knee work

Shoulder work

Floor transitions

Travelling floor sequences

Full-length leggings help protect the skin from friction, grazes and floor burns while still allowing dancers to move safely and freely.

Warm-Up & Protective Layers

Official Studio Joggers may be worn over leggings during warm-up but must be removed when requested by the teacher to reduce the risk of trips, falls or restricted movement.

Dancers should also bring either an Official Studio Hoodie or an approved Official Studio long or short-sleeved layer.

These may be worn during choreography involving shoulder rolls, slides and other floorwork where additional skin protection is beneficial.

Knee Protection

Gel knee pads are highly recommended, particularly for intermediate and advanced dancers completing more demanding floorwork.

Footwear

Contemporary may be danced using one of the following options, depending on the class, choreography and teacher’s instruction:

Option 1 – Bare Feet
Recommended where maximum grip and connection with the floor are required.

Option 2 – Contemporary Dance Socks
These may be worn where appropriate but must be removed when requested by the teacher, particularly for movements where additional grip is required.

Option 3 – Foot Undies / Contemporary Footwear
These may be worn where appropriate.

The teacher’s instruction regarding footwear and clothing will always take priority where necessary for safety
